Thinking of planning your Wedding at Whitley Hall?

If you're planning a winter wedding at Whitley Hall Hotel in South Yorkshire, John and Christine's day is a perfect example of just how stunning and relaxed a cold weather wedding can be. As a Sheffield Wedding photographer, I love capturing winter weddings like this - especially when you get that crisp January atmosphere and a light dusting of snow. Their day had exactly that: beautiful seasonal light, a cosy winter feel, and just enough snow on the ground to create incredible, natural wedding photographs (even if it made things a little slippery underfoot!).

The Venue

Set in the rolling countryside of South Yorkshire, Whitley Hall is a luxury wedding venue that offers a perfect setting for any Wedding day.

If you’re looking for a venue with real character, Whitley Hall is hard to beat. This beautiful 16th-century mansion sits within 20 acres of lush gardens and peaceful grounds, tucked away in a quiet valley. It’s the kind of place that instantly feels special—an elegant, historic setting where you can create a truly memorable day with the people who matter most.

The Ceremony

John and Christine chose an indoor ceremony, which worked perfectly for a January wedding.

It created a really calm, intimate atmosphere — especially with the cold outside — allowing everyone to stay present and relaxed throughout. The soft natural light inside also worked beautifully for capturing genuine moments without anything feeling staged.

Indoor ceremonies like this are ideal in winter, keeping guests comfortable and allowing the day to flow naturally from one part to the next.

During the ceremony, I keep things as unobtrusive as possible — documenting everything as it happens so you can stay fully focused on each other.

A Quick Dash Outside (Family Portraits)

With snow still on the ground, we made the most of the outdoor space — but kept things quick and relaxed.

It was definitely a bit slippery underfoot, and with guests (especially grandma!) braving the cold, we kept group photos efficient so no one was stood outside too long.

That’s always part of the job — adapting to the day as it happens and making sure everything runs smoothly without adding stress.

Couple Portraits

Despite the cold, we stepped outside briefly for some couple portraits — and it was absolutely worth it.

The snow added a completely different feel to the photos, giving everything a soft, wintery atmosphere you just don’t get at other times of year.

Nothing forced, just a few quiet minutes away from everyone else before heading back inside to warm up.

We also managed to get some lovely shots indoors too, Whitley has a gorgeous dual staircase which we made the most of!

The Reception & Evening

Once everyone headed back inside, the day just seemed to settle into this really lovely, easy pace. Nothing felt rushed — it was one of those moments where people could just relax, chat properly, and take it all in.

There’s something about winter weddings that naturally brings people closer together. Maybe it’s the contrast from the cold outside, or just that cosy, tucked-away feeling, but it always feels a bit more intimate. And honestly, Whitley Hall suits that kind of atmosphere so well. It has that balance of being elegant without feeling over the top — more warm and inviting than formal.

As the evening went on, things shifted (in the best way) from quiet catch-ups to a bit more energy. People gathering around, drinks flowing, laughter getting louder — that kind of natural progression you can’t really plan, but always hope for. The space just lends itself to it, where guests can spread out or come together without it ever feeling too busy.

It’s the kind of setting where a winter wedding really makes sense. Cosy, relaxed, and full of those in-between moments that end up being the ones people remember most.
