Just Engaged? Here's When You Should Actually Book Your Wedding Photographer!

Whether you're freshly engaged, knee-deep in wedding planning spreadsheets or still enjoying that newly engaged bubble, you've probably started wondering when you actually need to book your wedding photographer.

Planning your Yorkshire wedding for 2027, 2028 or even 2029 might feel a little early, but when it comes to booking your photographer, timing matters more than most couples realise!


Here in South Yorkshire, popular wedding dates, especially those lovely spring and summer weekends, can be snapped up 12–24 months in advance. So, if photography is high on your priority list, it's definitely one of the first suppliers worth securing.


I'm Meg, a Yorkshire wedding photographer based in Barnsley, and one of the questions I get asked all the time is, "How far in advance should we book?"

The truth is, there's no magic number! Some couples book two years ahead, while others plan the most incredible wedding in just a few months. But if you've got your heart set on a particular photographer, it's always worth getting in touch sooner rather than later.


My 2027 wedding diary is now down to its final remaining dates, and I'm already taking bookings for 2028 and 2029!

So, whether you're super organised or only just starting to think about your big day, here's everything you need to know about when to book your wedding photographer — without the stress!

How far in advance should I book?


For weddings in Sheffield, Barnsley and across South Yorkshire:


  • Peak dates (May–September): 18–24 months ahead
  • Off-peak weddings: 9–15 months ahead


Many couples now book as soon as they secure their venue — especially for 2027 weddings.

Why do photographers get booked up early?


Unlike venues, photographers can only shoot one wedding per day.

That means once your date is gone, it’s gone.


If you’ve found a style you love (natural, relaxed, candid), it’s worth enquiring early to avoid disappointment.
